The „Santarvė“ is a newspaper which has been delivered to its readers for almost sixty years already. The very first number of the newspaper (called at the moment „Mažeikų tiesa“) was published in 1945.
Today the „Santarvė“ is a periodical publication published three times a week with its circulations exceeding 6000 copies, this means that every tenth resident of Mažeikiai gets one number of our newspaper.
The population of the region amounts to 67 thousand, 46 thousand of which reside in the center of the region and small towns, 21 thousand - in the countryside. The number of employable residents of the region exceeds 33 thousand people; schools of general education are attended by over 12 thousand students.
According to the population Mažeikiai is a number eight town in the country and one of the most significant industrial centers in Lithuania.
The image of Mažeikiai nowadays is closely associated with AB „Mažeikų nafta“ – the only oil refinery in the Baltic states. However, oil business is not the only feature attributed to our region. The region has a considerable number of profitably operated enterprises, manufacturers of dairy and meat products, trade companies as well as firms involved in service provision and construction. One of them is the Private Limited Liability Company „Santarvės laikraštis“, the production of which has become an integral part of lives of Mažeikiai dwellers.
Due to its venerable age the publication has acquired the name of a quality paper, the young and professional team of publishers provide it with a variety of innovations and inspire the anxiety for constant being at the center of events and problems. The staff of the editorial office is comprised of more than 20 persons, the average age of whose is 37 years.
The large circle of readers demands on a whole variety of needs, moral values, and attitudes. Every attempt possible is made in order to insure that everybody no matter if that is a youngster or a starting reader or even a retired resident of Mažeikiai, would be able to regularly find in our newspaper the topicalities they are interested in and find to be useful to them.
The mission of „Santarvė“ is to spread information on our region as well as on all the country, the monthly supplements „Plius Ketvirtadienis“ (Plus Thursday) and „Plius Sveikata“ (Plus Health) present stories about colourful personalities, the analysis of the relation between a family and work, travel impressions, medical advices, literal ventures. This is the second year already since „Santarvė“ has started raising the team meant to replace the present one in the future – the school of Junior Journalist has been established next to the editorial office; its pupils are provided with the possibility to twice per month prepare a thematic page „Pagreitis“ (Acceleration), the latter is planned to become a separate supplement to the newspaper the coming autumn.
Six members of the Association of Local Newspaper Publishers of the Western Lithuania have joined in publishing of a weekly supplement „Vakarų Lietuva“ (The Western Lithuania). We have also entered the National Association of Publishers of Regional and Urban Newspapers.
Life is interesting, it is constantly changing, and so are we – by learning, acquiring experience, improving the contents as well as the appearance of the newspaper. Our attempts have been rewarded with the reliance of the dwellers of the region put upon us – 80-85 per cent of the “Santarvė” circulation is comprised of subscription. The fact was also appreciated by our advertising clients from Lithuania as well as neighbouring countries.
